Theory Of Everything. or BrokenTOE? Physics has been trotting out its quest for a theory of everything since long before chaos and hierarchy theories were discovered or invented. The consequent overthrow of reductionism has brought ineradicable uncertainty in the causal relationships within any system with a chaotic component. So the old hope that all subjects will one day blithely reduce to physics has been all but annihilated. Yet physics continues to use this word Everything as if chaos had never been discovered. Granted, the physicists' TOE would be a remarkable achievement. as would the progress already made, where three of the four forces have been unified. (I don't actually know what that means, but I'm sure it's significant.) Maybe they should revive the TAO of Physics (Fritjof Capra's classic) somehow merging its elegant humility with their hubristic ambition, and get something like, THEORY ALMOST OF EVERYTHING (TAOE. Oh, speaking of ELEGANT HUMILITY, check out my TOE. It's based on an underlying epistemic structure common to many areas of human inquiry (including Weebly...
Leopold described the trophic cascade in his essay Thinking Like a Mountain before any of this work was done. What is impressive, is how well Paine and Este's work empirically validates Leopold's anecdotal description.
